In the third of four video lectures on Western Art and Changing World Pictures (which can each be watched independently), Emeritus Professor Richard Read focuses in detail on Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fourteenth-century frescoes of the Allegory of Good and Bad Government in the council chamber of Siena’s town hall.
He demonstrates how vividly medieval visual thinkers dramatised the spiritual basis of secular consequences resulting from the choice between republican government and despotism at a time when tyrannies were rife.
